You’re not doing this alone.

How to prepare

  • Avoid eating or drinking after midnight unless your care team advises otherwise.
  • Take only medications approved by your surgeon or anesthesia provider.
  • Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after your procedure.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and leave valuables at home (jewelry, large bags).
  • Bring a current medication list (including vitamins, supplements, and over-the-counter meds)

What to bring

 Bring:

  • Photo ID and insurance card (if applicable)
  • Any paperwork or instructions you were given
  • A list of medications and allergies

Leave at home when possible:

  • Jewelry (including rings), watches, and other valuables
  • Contact lenses (if you can wear glasses instead)

Medications and supplements

To help keep you safe, your care team may give specific instructions about medications. Be sure to tell your provider if you take:

  • Blood thinners (prescription or aspirin)
  • Diabetes medications (including insulin)
  • Weight-loss medications or injections
  • Herbal supplements (some can affect bleeding or anesthesia)

If you’re unsure, call your surgeon’s office for guidance before your procedure.

Health updates to share before your procedure

Please let your care team know if, in the days leading up to your procedure, you experience:

  • Fever, cough, or signs of illness
  • New shortness of breath
  • A new medication, allergy, or recent ER/urgent care visit

Your pre-op visit

  • We’ll review your medical history, medications, and allergies.
  • You’ll have time to ask questions and share anything you want us to know (including past anesthesia experiences or concerns).
  • It’s completely normal to feel nervous before anesthesia. If you’re worried, tell your nurse or anesthesia provider—our team is here to explain what’s happening, answer questions, and help you feel more at ease.
  • We’ll confirm the plan designed to support your safety and comfort.
