Before Your Procedure

Your anesthesia team takes time to know you before the procedure begins.

Before your procedure, a CVA anesthesia provider will review your medical history, current medications, and any allergies during a pre-anesthesia evaluation. This is how we develop a plan tailored specifically to you.

The questions below and the guidance on this page will help you arrive prepared, confident, and ready for the safest possible experience.

Fasting Guidelines Before Anesthesia

Fasting before anesthesia reduces the risk of aspiration. General guidelines include:

  1. No solid food for at least 8 hours before your procedure
  2. No milk, juice with pulp, or alcohol for at least 6 hours before
  3. Clear liquids (water, black coffee, apple juice without pulp) may be allowed up to 2 hours before, depending on your facility's instructions
  4. Always follow the specific instructions given by your surgical facility

Medications and Anesthesia

Some medications interact with anesthesia. Before your procedure:

  • Provide a complete list of all medications, supplements, and vitamins you take
  • Ask your surgical team which medications to continue and which to pause
  • Blood thinners, diabetes medications, and blood pressure medications often require specific guidance
  • Do not stop any prescribed medication without direction from your care team

What to Bring and Leave Behind

  • Bring your ID, insurance card, and any required paperwork
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
  • Leave jewelry, valuables, and contact lenses at home
  • Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home

Your Pre-Anesthesia Evaluation

Your anesthesia provider will ask about your health history, review your medications, assess your airway, and explain the type of anesthesia planned for your procedure. This is the right time to ask questions and share any concerns you have.
