What Cardiac Anesthesia Involves
Cardiac anesthesia is a subspecialty of anesthesiology focused on managing anesthesia for patients undergoing cardiac surgery, major vascular procedures, or complex non-cardiac surgery in patients with significant cardiac disease. Cardiac anesthesiologists play a critical role in intraoperative monitoring, hemodynamic management, and real-time assessment using tools such as transesophageal echocardiography (TEE).
TEE allows the anesthesiologist to visualize cardiac function in real time during surgery, supporting rapid assessment of volume status, ventricular function, and surgical outcomes at the time of the procedure. Not all anesthesia providers hold TEE training. CVA's cardiac anesthesia team includes TEE-credentialed specialists.
